Mission

Our mission is to educate and empower our citizens to make GREEN energy choices in their lives. We also want to influence our elected officials to reduce energy consumption within our municipalities and to select GREEN energy choices. We want to reduce our carbon emissions and serve as an inspiration and an example for other communities to follow our efforts.

TREES in The Pelhams

The Pelham tree canopy has crucial environmental benefits: it offsets climate change, cleans air, and curbs flooding. Trees are a community resource, not just a landscape feature and both the Village of Pelham and Pelham Manor are considering new legislation that promises to have a positive impact on Pelham’s trees.

The Village of Pelham is proposing to create a tree committee to recommend guidelines for curb trees, park / public spaces trees, and residential trees at the Pelham Village Board Meeting on Tuesday, April 14th at 7:30pm at 195 Sparks Avenue, Pelham.

The Village of Pelham Manor is considering a bill that will require the replacement of mature trees at the Pelham Manor Board Meeting at 8:15pm on Monday, April 27th at 4 Penfield Place, Pelham Manor.

We urge you to attend the meetings, or to write the mayors and council members to show your support for these important initiatives.

Clean-Up Day in Pelham

Separately, the Pelham Green Task Force is working with The Pelham Junior League to support a Pelham-wide “Clean-Up” Day on Saturday, May 9th.  Save the date and join us!

Recycling in Pelham

Members of the Pelham Green Task Force have been observing recycling by the commercial and apartment building community in the Village of Pelham since October 2008. Based on their informal survey, they have designated 38 “Gold Star” recyclers. This status is conferred on businesses/apartment buildings that routinely recycle more than one kind of recyclable material. Most of the gold star designees were recycling boxes and commingled bottles/cans/plastic. A few gold star recipients were given that designation because they recycled boxes and significant quantities of paper, but no commingled materials.

Pelham Green also identified that, in addition to the gold star recyclers, approximately 49 businesses/apt. buildings in the Village only put out boxes. Another 101 businesses/apt buildings in the Village appear to recycle nothing at all.  Pelham Green is looking for volunteers to help visit businesses in these two categories to obtain information about why more materials aren’t being recycled (for example, some food service establishments send bottles back to their vendor for deposits). Volunteers are also needed to begin a similar survey of Pelham Manor.

Westchester County provides a “report card” estimating the percentage of recycled materials received from each community. The report cards through 2007 were about 40% for Pelham and Pelham Manor. Pelham Green is working with the Village of Pelham trustees and administration to increase this percentage to 50% in 2009.

If you feel that your business/apt building in the Village of Pelham has been unfairly excluded from this list of gold star recipients, please contact info@pelhamgreen.org to discuss your recycling program. Please remember that Pelham Green was only able to document what was visible and obvious based on materials at curbside.

Congratulations to the following Gold Star recipients!!
